Holiday Survival Guide
Ah….The Holidays. I really do have a love/hate relationship with this time of year. Being such a busy time of the year, it is very easy to get caught up in the fray and not fully enjoy the season. Over the course of my life I have developed a few guiding principles to help me take full advantage of the opportunity to rest and enjoy time with loved ones.
First off…..RELAX. Don’t over schedule yourself with parties, family gatherings or other obligations. Set one thing that you want to do over the Holiday Season and don’t sweat everything else. It can be hosting a small party, a religious observance or some other activity that is “just for you”. Around my house, we have a tradition of going to a neighborhood bar for a few glasses of holiday cheer on Christmas Eve. Don’t knock it; it’s a nice break from the family!
Secondly, don’t get caught up in the hype of the perfect Holiday anything. There is no perfect anything and the Holidays are what YOU make of them. Trust me on this, I once spent two hours on Christmas Day in a bunker while my base was under a rocket attack. That is still one of my favorite Holiday memories! The point being is the best Holidays are the ones that just happen, often to our surprise.
Don’t buy into the commercialization of the Holiday Season. I have never understood why people kill themselves (or sometimes others…..literally) just to get little Johnny this year’s version of Robo-Lazer Geek or Tickle-Me-Elmo! Sure, I like to give gifts just as much as others. But gifts aren’t supposed to say how much I care about you, just that I do care about you. I think the old adage is true, “it’s the thought that counts”.
Lastly, get some much needed rest and reconnect with your friends and family. If you are anything like me, you have had a busy year. Take the time to reflect on your successes and failures over the past 12 months. Set a few goals for the next year and be sure to take time to truly appreciate all the great people in your life. After all, it’s the Holidays people….you are supposed to enjoy them!
Happy Holidays everyone, see you next year.
