Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a rich history. And as time goes by, there is even more information being discovered about how jiu-jitsu was developed in Brasil; not jiu jitsu in el segundo! Hehe…I will get to that shortly!

Have you ever heard of the International Traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu- ITBJJ? I did not until recently.

Grandmaster Jose “Ze” Gomes – Brother of Ivan Gomes legendary Vale Tudo fighter and Carlson Gracie’s toughest opponent- heads this federation in Brazil. The two, Carlson Gracie and Ivan Gomes, would become friends and operate an academy before Carlson went on to do his own thing. Ivan Gomes was invited to Japan by Antonio Inoki and lived there during 1975-1977. Their match never materialized.

The ITBJJ has a very interesting history, belt system and objectives; boast of keeping it vale tudo (Anything Goes)!

I was contacted by a Eduardo Moraes that is ranked under Jose Gomes as a 9th degree red belt. Mr. Moraes has federation in Brasil called the International Dojo Ciam that ranks different Martial Arts systems including jiu-jitsu from Brazil. The ITBJJ is part of this federation and has its own federation with a number is schools that use their curriculums and ranking system.

The International Dojo Ciam has been honoring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu professors from both the Gracie Lineage and The Luiz França/FADDA Lineage, and of course professors under the Gomes’ ITBJJ ranking system. This is the first certificate from an organization that I have accepted out of respect. In Martial Arts, there are few moments or many where federations or organizations give a person credit and honor ones journey. In this case, due the unique Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history and good will, I am thankful for the black belt certificate from The international Dojo Ciam and its affiliation to the ITBJJ.
