jiu jitsu in hermosa beach and the Real World Championships
The other day I was walking around the south bay shopping with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu t-shirt on. I got into talking with one the security guards and he asked me if I trained jiu jitsu in hermosa beach? I let him know about Elite Training Center and that we are currently located in Redondo Beach about 2 miles down PCH. He asked me about my experience and if I completed because he had a friend that was really into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. His friend competed in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships.
And from there our little talk about jiu jitsu in hermosa beach went into a little history lesson about the real World Championships of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu….
I let the security guard know that I competed in the Mundials in Brazil in 1999 as a blue belt and in 2001 as a purple belt. The Mundials “is” the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships under the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). Back when the event was held in Brazil, all the Brazilian fighters had to qualify for the event, so all outsides from the country fought against Brazilian State, Regional, National and International Champions from Brazil just walking onto the mats in the Mundials. Today the IBJJF holds the World Championships in the United States and there is not qualifying for the Brazilian Fighters or anyone else. In 2007, I competed as a black belt in the IBJJF World Championships; however, I did not get the feeling of being in a different country and/or completing against fighters that were already State Championships etc. The black belt category was 10 minutes in length and had a scoring system of points to win or win by submission hold.
Our little talk about jiu jitsu in hermosa beach and the World Championships also lead into what is the Real Thing! I spoke about the different types of World Championships.
* IBJJF – Mundials – Time Limits, Points, Submission, No Qualifying & No Money Received for Winning.
* WPBJJ Championship- The World Professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships- Held In The Middle East- Shorter Time Limits, Points, Submission, World Qualifying and Money Received for Winning
* CBJJO- Confederacao Brasilera de Jiu Jitsu Olimpico- “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Cup in Brasil” Time Limits, Points, Submission, No Qualifying and Money Received for Winning.
* Gracie World Championships- Longer Time Limits, Finals No Time Limit, No Points, Submission Only, No Qualifying and No Money Received For Winning.
The above events are in my eyes the best competitions to win and to call your self a world championship in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; however, I think the REAL world champion wins by submission only with no time limits! How you train will effect your outcome in these events above. Good Luck!
My best,
