Kickboxing Around the World
Its very easy for us to get trapped thinking about our own little corner of the world as we go about our day to day activities. I think that is especially true for those of us who live in the South Bay because it is it’s own little corner of LA much less the rest of the world. I was reading some news and I came across an article about kickboxing in Sudan that I thought was pretty cool and I wanted to share. The article was about people in Sudan using Kickboxing to bring people together.
The article talks about how this club in Sudan was founded to bring the tribes together and overcome the differences that cause so much violence. I think this is a really interesting idea because most people tend to think about martial arts as a individual sport yet here is a group of people that are using it to bring people together.
At Elite, we work to foster the same kind of environment. When you are on the mat, it isn’t about you. Yes, you do learn and practice your technique but you are able to do that because you have good partners and other people there to help you. This environment is what creates such a diverse student body at Elite (male, female, kids, adults, etc.) just like it is starting to do in Sudan. I think that environment of inclusion and support is essential to being a good martial artists and having a good place to train. So next time you are the mat, think about that and think about how kickboxing is used around the world as more than just a way to work out.
