The Importance of the Holding Pads
Often, while kickboxing in redondo beach, we underestimate how important holding pads correctly is when in reality a pad holder can make or break a martial artist based on how they hold the pads. A pad holder can make a martial artist look amazing or like they have no idea what’s going on. That’s why its important to remember that pad holding is an active activity, one of which you have to be engaged in and focused on.
There is one moment in my own martial arts career when I was kickboxing in redondo beach at Elite and I just couldn’t get my rear kick correct. I knew there was something off about it but I couldn’t figure out what. When the instructor came over and watched, they ended up fixing something the pad holder was doing. After that my kick felt 10 times better and all because of a small correction in how the pads were being held.
One other thing to keep in mind is to ask questions. We often ask questions about the technique we are working on but rarely about how to hold the pads for that technique. If ever you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask it. While we were doing kickboxing in redondo beach this past weekend at the Krav Maga promotion, there were some confusion and questions about the kick and 4-count drills we were doing. Shihan stepped in to clear those up and went over not only the techniques but also how to hold the pads for those techniques. After that quick instruction on technique and pad holding, the drills went so much better.
Always remember that pad holding is an active sport and never be afraid to ask questions!
