Listening To Your Body As A Martial Artist
Listening to your body is one of the most difficult things to do as a martial artist. Symptoms of course are injuries sustained during training or the off day where perhaps a scratch is in your throat. Often, we decide to “push through.” It is imperative that you listen to what your body is telling you.
Krav Maga, Muay Thai Kickboxing, MMA, BJJ and Kali Silat practitioners all go through the ignorance phase. “I’m fine. It’s just a slight sprain” or “naw, I’m good, I was sick over the weekend, but just need to sweat a bit.”
A slight sprain can lead to severe pain and discomfort or accelerate an injury and “sweating out” an illness can lead to spreading germs to people who come to the gym to maintain a healthy lifestyle, not become ill.
As much as we want to believe that practicing the martial arts can make us superhuman (myself more than most), it does not. It can make us super aware of what is going on with our bodies. Preventative maintenance is the key to being a successful martial artist.
It doesn’t matter if Krav Maga or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is your favorite. It doesn’t matter in Muay Thai and Kali are your disciplines. We must listen to our bodies and understand the importance of what they tell us. Longevity is paramount to the martial lifestyle.
We are so very fortunate to live in the South Bay (Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance, El Segundo, Palos Verdes). Contemplate your options when it comes to training. Are you sick or injured? Give it a go with a run or some body weight exercises at home. Maybe even have a jump rope of your own and test your wind.
Be smart in all the arts you participate in. More importantly, be conscious for the sake of your training partners.
