Our Krav Maga Self-Defense Classes
Elite Training Center’s Krav Maga system teaches moderation of techniques to fit less-lethal situations, protecting one’s self while minimizing harm to the attacker. Our guiding principles include:
- Stay unharmed
- Neutralize the attacker
- Escape quickly
- Be prepared for multiple attackers
- Stay off the ground
- The transition from defensive to the offensive with multiple strikes, kicks, knees, elbows, and other techniques
- Use intuitive, simple actions
- Exploit vulnerable points on the body to expedite escape
- Use any available objects as weapons
Our instructors emphasize two training rules. First, there are no rules in a fight, and second, safety for self and partner when training is paramount. The training uses pads or focus mitts so students may experience striking or receiving blows at full power. We focus on technique and application while sometimes using loud music or other distractions to teach students to concentrate under stress and distraction. To simulate real-world situations, students may be worked aerobically to near exhaustion, then required to defend themselves as they might on the streets.
Elite Training Center also emphasizes teaching situational awareness and observation to understand your surroundings and potentially threatening circumstances before an attack is launched.
The Origin of Krav Maga
Krav Maga is a reality-based self-defense system developed in Israel by Imi Lichtenfeld. Krav Maga has seen various forms and interpretations depending on situations such as location, participants, and other demographics. Originally, Krav Maga was developed by borrowing from techniques in Western-style boxing, Muay Thai Kickboxing, wrestling, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu. Unlike most traditional Martial Arts, the interpretation of Krav Maga remains and should remain evolutionary. Martial systems, as instructed at Elite Training Center, are always in a constant state of change. Elite’s instructors devote their lives to the success of teaching and the interpretation of Krav Maga. To do anything less is a disservice to the essence of Krav Maga and its creators.
The term self-defense is open to interpretation and can relate to many systems. As mentioned above, Krav Maga was developed using various martial systems to create what is referred to as “reality-based self-defense.” Reality-based self-defense does not practice traditional Katas. This does not take anything away from Kata and those who practice it. Many of Elite’s staff have studied, explored, and belted in more traditional styles. Krav Maga uses an approach relating to a higher level of situational awareness. There is no absolute in combat. The only absolute is the existence of the combative situation.
Those who see the YouTube videos of Krav Maga techniques are often impressed or at the very least interested in the aggression and speed at which they are executed. First and foremost, situational awareness must be understood. An attack is often the result of a lack of situational awareness. Far too often, we put ourselves in unavoidable positions.
Fitness and Conditioning in Krav Maga
Although the Krav Maga is a very technical system here at Elite Training Center, we feel that overall fitness and conditioning is a crucial aspects of protecting yourself and your family. We have only a limited amount of adrenaline available in our bodies. In a situation where you are required to defend yourself or possibly even fight for your life, there will be a time when your adrenaline dumps, and you’ll have to rely on your level of physical fitness to finish the job.
The more fit you are, the more prepared you are to defend yourself. Daily we hear from people without much experience about how they want to learn Krav Maga and their fitness levels are already “good enough.” What needs to be considered is that there is no such thing as too fit, too strong, or too fast when protecting yourself or your loved ones. Conditioning is extremely important when it comes to self-defense.
Striking and Combatives
While being physically fit and technical carries its value in self-defense, it is not the only path toward success in defending yourself. The tools we use, known at Elite Training center as ‘combatives’ and ‘combative flow’, play a major role in the ability to defend yourself. At Elite Training Center, students learn a combination of aggressive, street-fighting strikes combined with an understanding of Muay Thai Kickboxing integrated into our curriculum. Krav Maga at Elite Training Center focuses on how combatives affect the attacker’s body and how the body reacts after being hit. This allows us to learn how to use the “right tool for the right job” to escape the situation as quickly and effectively as possible. Attacking the senses, soft tissue, and joints are the key components of learning self-defense combatives. Awareness of this, combined with a good understanding of Muay Thai Kickboxing, defensive tactics against strikes, how to move quickly and smoothly, footwork, and head movement, is paramount to understanding Krav Maga combatives at Elite Training Center.
Aggression in Krav Maga
In line with a solid combative “toolbox”, a key component to success when defending yourself is the willingness to be aggressive. Having the will never to stop until you are successful is something inside us all. It is simply the will to survive. At Elite Training Center, the student needs to understand this principle. The psychology behind combat must be understood. We often address this principle to get into a combative mindset. Do you have what it takes to be successful for yourself and your family?
Typical street fights, as typical as they can be, are often surprise attacks such as a sucker punch, haymaker punches, chokes, bear hugs, grabs, and more. You will learn how to quickly and effectively eliminate threats from varying situations. Elite’s Muay Thai Kickboxing is a key ingredient in understanding our Krav Maga system. The use of elbows and knees are effective tools that maximize damage to an assailant.
The ground fighting aspect of Krav Maga lends itself back to situational awareness. To combat more lethal threats such as handguns, impact weapons, and blades, we must understand the functionality of these weapons. Elite’s Krav Maga system incorporates elements from top-tier special operations units and Kali/Silat (Filipino Martial Arts) to combat these threats.
The particular skill set to deal with a gun, rifle, shotgun, knife, edged weapon, or impact weapon, must be approached with caution, intelligence, and discipline. Elite Training Center’s Chief Instructor has over 20 years of professional field experience and continually researches and develops our system with his team of instructors from each discipline. Weapon disarms are not limited to what Krav Maga does but take the best of other civilian and military systems to bring cutting-edge martial technology to Elite’s students.
Elite Training Center offers tactical weapons courses in self-defense for civilians and tactical applications for military or law enforcement personnel. These courses include but are not limited to the tactical pistol, tactical shotgun, and tactical long gun. Elite’s courses are taught by former and current special operations personnel. Elite believes that the tactics applied by military and law enforcement can be scaled down and transitioned into civilian usage as well.
Jiu-Jitsu, a Martial Art from which many systems borrow, plays a huge role in Elite Training Center’s Krav Maga. Jiu-Jitsu is a large system, not only used for ground fighting. Understanding fighting on the ground is the key to not getting caught there. The basic program is instilled in Elite’s students to get off the ground as quickly as possible.
As you progress through the Krav Maga system, the usage of ground fighting becomes very important. Like any system worth studying, it is important to understand what to use and when. Fighting multiple attackers is never a good idea. Doing it on the ground? Horrible. Do not mistake this mindset for a lack of Jiu-Jitsu being considered for a self-defense application. It is a large part of Elite’s Krav Maga system, more so than many practitioners of the more traditional Israeli system.
Elite Krav Maga
Krav Maga at Elite Training Center is a very large system constantly being refined. To reiterate, combat is evolutionary by nature. Regardless of your interest, Elite’s system covers many combative scenarios ranging from common forms of street aggression to home invasions to multiple attackers. There is something for everyone at Elite Training Center.
