Learn martial arts

In Muay Thai, and to learn martial arts in general, building a solid foundation for your technique is very important. In class to learn martial arts you should focus on doing the drills correctly and getting the proper repetition in so you can develop good habits. This is especially important for students at the beginning level. Developing correct technique in the beginning of your martial arts journey, when you first begin to learn martial arts, will save you a lot of time and energy in the long run. Retraining improper technique and trying to get rid of bad habits that you developed is a very tedious and annoying process. For me personally I developed a bad habit of raising my chin when I throw combinations. This developed for me from hitting pads with my chin raised (despite the constant reminders I received by my instructors to do otherwise). I didn’t think it was that important to keep my chin down while hitting pads. Because of this over time my body got use to my chin being at a certain level as I throw combinations, and now when I go on the offensive when I spar my chin slightly raises leaving me vulnerable to counters. Keeping my chin down is something I have to constantly think about in order to retrain the improper technique I developed. Believe me, I know it could be tedious and sometimes boring to go slow and focus on developing your skills in class, but martial arts is a life long journey. There is no rush. Taking your time to properly drill will pay off an unbelievable amount in the long run.
