Martial arts training
“Be sure to take time for yourself.” This phrase is familiar to every hard working adult, yet most rarely follow its advice. Mothers of young children in particular hear it all the time, but it applies to anyone who feels true responsibility for others, be it fathers, mothers, teachers, CEOs, or small business owners. Anyone who is conscientious about the people in their care finds it difficult to let go and hand over control or oversight for a period of time, yet it’s so very important. The weight of responsibility eventually cracks even the strongest person. Without time away from stressors our immune systems get weaker; if we are in a physical job our bodies break down; if we never get a break from the monotonous demands of caring for young children our mental and emotional health suffers. Taking breaks is crucial, and even if you are young and don’t have much weight on your shoulders yet it’s a great habit to start. It will benefit all parts of your life. Martial arts training in arts such as kickboxing or BJJ is an excellent way to take time for you and still get exercise.
Since many of us have jobs and responsibilities that are removed from martial arts training, training in Muay Thai kickboxing (or MMA, Mixed Martial Arts, Krav Maga, BJJ, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Kali Silat) is a great way to get some “me” time while simultaneously improving our physical health and self defense skills. When I’ve had a long day with the kids I love coming into Elite Training Center and seeing people I care about, finding out what’s going on in their lives, having conversations that don’t involve baby dolls and tea parties, hitting some pads in kickboxing, and focusing intently on something that has nothing to do with my everyday responsibilities. And when I go home, I’m a healthier, happier, and more patient mom for my kids. At first it was difficult to carve out that time for martial arts training in classes such as kickboxing and Krav Maga, but when I saw the physical and mental benefits I was convinced that it was important and found ways to make the time. As a result, the people I care about benefit from my martial arts training as well.
Martial arts training is a great escape because it forces you to focus and leave outside stresses off the mat. Training safely and being a good partner requires this focus, and when you add the physical stress relief of hitting for kickboxing or grappling (MMA) or lifting it all adds up to an extremely beneficial hour or two. So find this time for yourself! In the long run it will benefit not only you but the people and responsibilities for which you are accountable. For many of us, martial arts training is a great way to change up our routines and relieve stress. Other great ideas are taking a walk or getting outside, calling a friend, getting a massage, date night, sporting events…anything that you enjoy that is removed from your daily responsibilities is vital to your physical, mental and emotional health, so make the time!
