Learn to train smart!
Learning to train is a paramount element to becoming a well rounded martial artist. What does this mean to the numerous students and instructors at Elite Training Center in Redondo Beach, CA? We all have a preconceived idea as to what we are getting ourselves involved in. YouTube pitches of Krav Maga, MMA, BJJ, Kali and Muay Thai kickboxing usually flaunt the hard, aggressive version of martial arts. This either inspires or excites the potential student or in most cases “scares” them off. Sure sure…everybody wants to spar! They do until they actually spar. That’s why it is important to learn how to train, thus learning how to spar. The pace must be set and held. It must be at a level that doesn’t leave either participant bitter and/or defeated. In no way does this dismiss the necessity of hard training. However it is important to take the proper steps to get to that level.
Krav Maga, MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ, and Kali are all potentially lethal arts. That is what they were created for, self defense (minus MMA, however it’s roots and mixture leads to an all encompassing self defense system if necessary). A small percentage of people enjoy contact. Being punched in the face is something that not many are particularly fond of. It is part of the game though. Yes, a game. Sparring should be considered fun and game like.
We must move slowly, but with purpose. We as martial artists must take responsibility for one another to ensure that our partner’s paces are not mistakes. If they are, they should be corrected. If our partners are going too hard, we must be responsible and communicate what needs addressing. Great steps and achievements can be gained through proper communication. Great martial artists are built, not discovered.
